9h35 – 10h15 : Physiological monitoring in the lab to unlock the extra 1%
- Andrew Kilding - Directeur du SPRINZ (Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand)
Sport physiologist Professor Andrew Kilding is obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the 1%; that tiny margin in athleticism which separates gold medal winners from the rest.
“The difference between winning and losing can often be extremely small. My job is to use physiological research to help athletes prepare and perform better to close that gap,” he says.
Today, Professor Kilding heads a research team working on a wide range of projects.
“Each research project is unique; the individual people and the sport you work with, so they are all rewarding. I get the most satisfaction from helping coaches or athletes to make decisions on how they might condition or use science as part of their preparation.
“Every athlete’s performance has a physical aspect that we can dissect and look at through science to find out how we can improve it next time or what went wrong. I think those real-life challenges are what get me up in the morning and get me excited.”
